The Cupcake Caper…A Crime of Passion

Last Friday I made cupcakes to take to a birthday party for Firstborn’s girlfriend. They were a little labor intensive, but I wanted them to be special. I had been wanting to try ice cream cone cupcakes for a long time and had recently seen a photo that “one-upped” the basic sprinkle decoration. So I bit the bullet and turned on the oven in this miserably hot weather we are experiencing….a labor of love.

I just used a basic white cake mix. They baked up perfectly—cake all the way to the bottom with perfect little round tops. I melted chocolate; I chopped nuts; I drained cherries; I made cream cheesing icing…..now for the fun part.

The result is darling cupcakes that resemble soft serve ice cream cones and sundaes.

Pretty cute, huh? Alas, that is not the end of the story….and it doesn’t have a pretty ending. It seems in my jubilation I forgot certain laws of physics. Ice cream cone cupcakes ( I seem to have forgotten) are TOP HEAVY and are sitting on a base a little larger than a quarter. In moving them, the ENTIRE pan fell to the floor.

Now, you may remember Charlie—seen here in much happier times…before he em”bark”ed on a life of crime….before he swooped in and ate the cupcakes.

I hear he’s pleading insanity….me too :)

I am joining Hoosier Homemade for Cupcake Tuesday (if she doesn’t kick me and Charlie out). You can find her here for delicious cupcakes that people actually got to eat!

Thanks for sharing my tale of woe. Don’t forget to say hello and send Charlie a little support. Don’t worry— he didn’t get sick and he’s been released on his own recognizance :)~~Susan

  1. Oh my, your cupcakes are adorable. Sorry about the mishap, though. Your loss...Charlie's gain.

  2. I used to make these (not this pretty) for my kids school classes. The first time, I put them in cake pans to transport...it was not pretty. I learned to put them in cupcake tins in the cake pans. Much better.

  4. Ha ha! Kind of reminds of of A Christmas Story where the dogs from next door swooped in and devored the turkey and the family ended up at a Chinese restaurant! The cupcakes looked gorgeous!

  5. Forgive me but I'm laughing so hard that I can barely type!! I'm sure the party girl (and her party) would have loved them. My Oliver is thinking that your Charlie is one lucky dog.

  7. I was sorry to read all those beautiful cupcakes fell to the floor but I'm sure Charlie only thought he was helping clean up the mess :-)

P.S. We made it through the moving process this weekend. Once we got a parking spot it wasn't too bad. Alex is in Deaton so it wasn't as crazy as some of the bigger dorms. He started classes this morning and called after his first class to fill me in. He is really excited!

  10. Oh Susan, all of that work! They are (were) soooo cute! I'm sure Charlie didn't really appreciate the cuteness - just the deliciousness. The girls at the b'day party would have loved them! I'm glad you at least got a picture of them before Charlie got to eat them, and I'm glad you can laugh at the situation. laurie

I would love to know, did you put the ice cream cones in a cupcake pan?
And I'm so sorry that your pooch has taken to a life of crime. I must say though, I think that makes you an accessory to the crime!
If the cone wasn't bite, you must aquit!
Such a fun post all round!

  18. Oh no! I am so sorry. When I have made those in the past I've taken a big gift box, covered the top with festive paper, cut holes in it and put the cupcakes in there.

    Your display was adorable, though.

  19. My Mom did these for my class when she was a "room mother" in 1974! They were the hit of the sixth grade and I remembered it in a recent Memoirs I was doing of Elem. school. Such fond memories!!!
